When it comes to gym etiquette people always think about the obvious ones like putting weights away and wiping benches. I think there is something way more important that you shouldnt overlook. Be friendly and courteous. The gym is a very, very intimidating place for a lot of people. Walking into an environment where people often judge others based on how they look is an incredibly scary thing for many. Even experienced people can feel uneasy if they go into a new gym for the first time with lots of strangers are looking at you. Think back to the very first time you ever stepped foot in a gym. Chances are, you will know what I mean. I certainly wasnt the most confident person in the room. If I see someone new in the gym I try and make a point of smiling and saying hi to make them feel welcome. If they ask if I am using equipment I am on I will say yes but always offer them the chance to work in with me. If there are no benches free I will make sure to check if people want to use it between my sets. I am more than happy to share a pair of dumbbells or take turns on the cables. If someone is benching on their own I will happily spot them. Remember, a lot of people are shy and asking strangers if they can use something after you takes courage. Dont be an arsehole. Dont bluntly tell them you are using it without offering any explanation of how long for giving them a chance to work in. Dont use three pieces of equipment at once and get moody if someone uses one whilst you are somewhere else. Dont tell them they cant use it until you are finished. Dont stop someone from using your bench and then sit there playing on your phone. Dont decline someone who asks you for a spot when you have no reason to say no. Manners cost nothing. The more I let people work in with me the more they were happy to return the favour. It becomes a great gym environment if you know people will share things with you even if you barely know them. Funnily enough, in a lot of weightlifting clubs or powerlifting gyms you will often find people going out of their way to spot you as well as helping you rack and rerack the plates. In a lot of cases, the more experienced trainees are the ones who are most helpful. Getting in shape takes a lot of work. You are going to have a long term relationship with the gym. It makes sense to also have a good relationship with the people who are in it.
