When my Dad died in 1974, it was at his request that he not be - TopicsExpress

When my Dad died in 1974, it was at his request that he not be left at the funeral home. It was not to save money, he just wanted to be at home. (actually it was my sisters house) After he passed away, my daughter, 9 at the time, sat on the bed with him until the funeral home picked him up. The employees had orders that no matter what time of day or night they were to prepare his body and bring him back to the house. We had to wait from Saturday evening until Tuesday to hold the funeral service because during the gas rationing my brother and his family could not get there until Monday night. My sisters house was a very old house with a large hall down the middle. We could go and come without ever going in to the livingroom. Friends and neighbors stayed 24 hrs a day. I think it was much easier on my 9 and 10 yr old daughters, because they were able to go and come as they pleased. They would go in the yard and pick flowers to put in PAPAs hands. When those wilted, it was just natural for them to take those and bring in fresh ones. It is not something I would want to repeat, but at the time we fulfilled Daddys wishes and it was right for us.
