When people ask me why Im in Hmong Club, I ask why not? There is then the uncomfortable silence as I watch them squirm, trying to figure out how to avoid the question. Finally, when I force them to answer, they respond, Cause youre white! But the question I have is this, why is it weird for a white person to have predominately Hmong friends, but it isnt for a Hmong person to have predominately white friends? Why could a Hmong person join any dominantly white club, but people tell me Im weird for joining HSA? This segregation that is evident proves that racism isnt dead. And quite possibly, this mindset of it being weird, could be the reason that I did join HSA. Because there, THERE is a group of individuals who dont stop looking at the color of a persons skin. Until people start realizing that we are all homo sapiens, and race is an illusion put on by society, how can we claim that racism is dead? The only way for us as a society to move past this is to stop just co-existing and into something more.
