When people feel powerless and worthless, their temptation is to react by exerting power over those who weaker than they are, and by imposing an external rigidity on those aspects of their lives that they can control. Such shows of force and control are their ways of compensating for a profound insecurity and fear. I think that this is the root of much of the fundamentalist impulse, in both Christianity and Islam.
