“When should a runner see a physical therapist?” Do you - TopicsExpress

“When should a runner see a physical therapist?” Do you want to increase your performance, relieve pain or learn how to rest and recovery properly as a new or seasoned runner? While you should absolutely seek a PT’s advice if you suspect you are injured, you don’t have to be hurting to benefit from seeing a physical therapist. Don’t let early warning signs keep you on the sideline and interrupt your training; see a PT if you experience any of the following: 1.When pain lingers even after RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation): If you have been resting for more than a few days and your pain is not improving, seek the advice from a qualified medical or health care provider, such as a physical therapist. “Pushing through the pain” can result in serious injury that can keep you off the road for many months! 2.When your body feels “off”: As you become a more experienced runner or up your mileage, you will likely become more in tune with your body and may feel like one leg is heavier than the other, you experience “tightness” that does not resolve with stretching or you notice loss performance or speed in your running pace. Often, these are early warning signs that something is wrong and addressing it quickly can help prevent a potential injury. 3.When you are planning to up mileage significantly or want to compete at your best in a race: Even if you have no pain or other symptoms, a physical therapist can perform an injury risk assessment and help you identify your risk factors. Based on the results a physical therapist can restore movement restrictions, give you strengthening exercises and cross-training options like the ElliptiGO and teach you rest and recovery techniques that can enhance your performance and help prevent injury from derailing your plans. 4.If you are a new runner: Congratulations! You have made an amazing choice for your wellbeing; however, don’t you want to keep yourself on the road long term so you can see consistent results? Then your best bet is to see a qualified sports physical therapist! They can teach you valuable self-care techniques such as the MELT Method to help decrease pain, inflammation, and accumulated stress to improve function and sports performance as well as practical application of certified pure therapeutic grade essential oils to ease muscle tension and enhance recovery. In sum, you don’t have to be injured to seek the advice of a physical therapist; we can help you with your fitness and performance goals too.
