When skillfully mixed together, words communicate, unite, share ideas, and evoke emotions. Words function just fine to an extent but, ultimately, it is impossible to condense the infinite spectrum of human experience into a few thousand different combinations. Music, like spoken words, requires a voice (human or instrumental). Like words, we use music to communicate a wide array of emotions, ideas and experiences. Music tells stories, making listeners hold their breath in anticipation and sigh with longing. Like words, music has the power to invigorate and calm, infuriate and charm.
