When someone who works for BP told me that now passengers would never be allowed on an oil tanker, it reminded me just how unique our experiences of travelling on tankers and banana boats were (although it is still possible to arrange passage on a cargo boat). I can remember swimming in tarpaulin pools, like the one in the photos; being on a launch at night to reach a ship moored offshore; hurricane warnings; organised childrens parties; and separate dining for parents and children. By the late sixties however, we were travelling by plane, something also quite unusual for that time. In 1976 we were on the ill-fated voyage of the Begonia, travelling from the UK to POS. It was meant to be the last time a passenger ship would dock in POS, but the Begonia only managed to limp into Bridgetown. What are your memories of going on long leave and when did people stop travelling on the oil tankers and why?
