When the IT industry was still in infancy, the government offered - TopicsExpress

When the IT industry was still in infancy, the government offered a number of sops to promote it. Many of these have outlived their usefulness, and should be ended. Take the case of the Rs.2/unit subsidy in power bills. It is madness to continue with this today. The irony is that even the companies are embarrassed by this, and happy to forego this. But the State government (and BESCOM, which keeps asking for raises every year from others) need to move to end this. The money could even be used to promote the same industry, if necessary. Make investments in open WiFi, internet access for the poor, and other useful steps that can bridge some of the gaps in the IT landscape.
