When the VC met representatives from this bannerless general students body, he produced a few shameful, disgusting, and downright provocative statements regarding his reaction to the whole issue. a) The VC said that his job is not to talk to agitating students, or to respond to them. He said that he is not paid to do this. We wonder what the VC is paid to do. Perhaps talk to certain political leaders and media houses. We are not quite sure. b) The VC has said that this IS NOT A PUBLIC ISSUE. That this is a legal issue. So apparently, everyone everywhere has to swallow whatever bureaucratic tangles he throws at them, because its a LEGAL issue and we have no right to express out collective dissatisfaction as a society against his actions. c) The VC has BLAMED THIS WHOLE INCIDENT ON THE FACT THAT HE GAVE PERMISSION FOR A FEST. In front of student representatives, the VC has said that if he had not given permission for the fest, this would not have happened. In our country, where people are quick to list chowmein and short skirts as a reason for molestation, our OWN VC OF JADAVPUR UNIVERSITY HAS SAID DIRECTLY, NOT EVEN INDIRECTLY, THAT FESTS ARE THE CAUSE BEHIND MOLESTATION. d) The VC has been threatening us with brute, physical violence since the very beginning. OUR OWN VICE-CHANCELLOR SAID THAT HE WILL BE FORCED TO CALL UPON THE FULL FORCE OF THE STATE IF WE CONTINUE OUR PEACEFUL AGITATION. If you do not join the protest now, the combined forces of the state, the University authorities and the media will crush this protest. And after they do, there will be no one to stand up to them. This is time. This is the moment. If you are silent now, bear in mind we might never again get the voice to speak. We cannot allow them to win. Not this time.
