When the no indictment announcement came down that familiar taste of vomit filled the back of my throat, my face got hot and my heart pounded out of my chest. I know this system is oppressive, even murderous, that it has no regard for Black life, but somehow I held out just a little hope…that this time would be different, that theyd at least put the murderous cop who gunned down #MikeBrown on trial. I was wrong. They have no regard for Black life, or Brown life, beyond how our lives can be used to feed their system of exploitation. So as my heart pounded, it became like a drum, driving me to dress the children, call my folks, and hit the streets. And as we joined together in Leimert Park, our hearts beat in unison and led us to speak, chant, and march…to stand and issue our battle cry in front of the police station on King…then East past the Coliseum…to USC where the students at the University of Spoiled Children stared at us like animals in a zoo, but some…especially the Black and Brown ones heeded our call Out of the dorms. Into the streets. And our power grew to 500, 600, 700…We marched passed the emblems of capitalist privilege, Mercedes dealers and Audi…then on to the Staples Center…and some took the freeway, summoning the spirit of our most powerful ancestors they faced rubber bullets and tear gas and together we are chipping away at state violence and oppression. Today we will do more, we will honor our ancestors and make our babies safer and we will force them to acknowledge that #BlackLivesMatter. See yall at 3PM Crenshaw and King.
