When the shootings in Newtown happened, the media reported that the teachers who hid their children within the classroom and did not open the door without seeing a police badge were heroes. In my opinion, this was not true heroism, it was protocol. They reacted to a situation the appropriate way. As a public school employee, we are trained for these situations. Pull any kids in the hall into your room, lock the door, shut the lights, pull the shades, hide the kids, do not let a student in even if they are knocking at your door (there may be a gunman holding a student against their will to gain access), use the signal system to indicate whether your room is safe, do not leave if the fire drill goes off, do not leave if the principal speaks via intercom and says the lockdown drill is over etc. You do not move until a police officer enters your room to say you are safe. The children practice these drills. In a society where everyone is dubbed a hero and true heroism has lost its meaning, I believe Megan Silberberger is really a hero. She heard gun shots from her office and did the exact opposite of the sitting duck drills we practice. She ran. She ran towards the danger and grabbed the shooter to stop him. Crazy? Probably. When the majority would run and hide, she ran to help. She is not a firefighter or a policeman who is trained to run towards danger. She broke protocol and who knows how many lives she saved. cnn/2014/10/26/us/washington-school-shooting/index.html
