When we make a decision to become a Christian and refer to ourselves as such, it takes more than just saying it but living it. If we love our sin, but not the consequences and just ask for forgiveness but continue in it we are not truly converted and have not repented. We must go through a sanctification process where we learn to love what our Creator loves and hate our sins as He hates them. Merely wanting to escape the consequences of our sins but not wanting to stop doing them is not being a Christ follower. When we do this we are not under grace, but walking outside of grace, are not being sanctified, thus we are not saved or really a Christian at all.
