When we talk about scapular stabilization, we are referring to the muscles that attach to the scapula or shoulder blade activating to control movement of the scapula. The scapula attaches to the collarbone and the upper arm bone (humerus), but has no bony attachment to the spine or ribs so it easily moves about, allowing for incredible range of motion in the arm and shoulder. That also means, however, that it is very important to ensure that the muscles that surround the scapula are working properly to support its movement. If the muscles around the scapula become lazy and inactive, other muscles will try to compensate, throwing the shoulder girdle out of alignment.
