“When you have lifted up the son of Man, then you will realize - TopicsExpress

“When you have lifted up the son of Man, then you will realize that I am he” (Jn 8:28) Setting our eyes on the uplifted Jesus on the cross brings salvation. The good Thief bears this out. Backtracking through the centuries we notice how this scene is symbolized in today’s First Reading. Impatience and grumbling are common among us. We fail to realize that it blinds us to what is really important Like the Israelites; we need to remember that the Lord, ever with us, is constantly leading us to the Promised Land. During this fifth week of Lent, what better way to prepare for Easter than by mediating on the cross of Jesus? We rejoice at Easter, but we have to remember that this Passion and death preceded this. Sadly, the sacred symbol of the cross has degenerated over the years. It is frequently used as an adornment, a fashion statement, or on a T-shirt. Such trends are thoughtless and empty. The cross is an important part of our religious culture and should not be ridiculed. However these worthless practices offer an opportunity to us believers to impress on the wearer the true meaning of these symbols. Many have been strengthened just by gazing on the cross. As a certain holy person once said, ‘I just look at him and he looks back at me.’ What a sublime thought! Need more be said? HYMN: We hail thee, Saviour and Lord. Thy cross ever be adored.
