When you talk of karma in the context of birth and re-birth, you must know that the term karma does not mean only action. When there is an action, there is always a reaction. So, Karma with respect to birth and rebirth refers to the chain of action and reaction… When I talk of ‘reaction’, I do not mean the result of action. What I mean is your reaction to the result; the response or the manner in which you receive the fruit of action. It is important for you to understand this because it is not action itself, which causes rebirth, but the reaction… So you feel happy and elated when the result is good; you feel unhappy and dejected when the result is bad. These emotional responses set off further desires and impulses, which inflate or deflate the ego. This in turn leads to more action, and action results in reaction and thus a never- ending chain of action- reaction- rebirth is produced. The desires and impulses remain with you even after death.
