When your kids dont feel in control of themselves, their natural impulse is to control other people and situations. Thats why your kids are bossy, carry around little things in their pockets or pick on siblings. Know why they change the rules of the game, cheat and quit at games? They are controlling the outcome of the game (losing makes them feel like losers). Likewise, we do the same thing. How many of you get anxious before leaving for a trip, trying to make sure all the details are taken care of? When you get anxious, I bet you get short and snap at your kids and spouse. I do. And that creates a defensive response. Be honest and assertive about your needs. Im feeling anxious about the trip so if I snap, Im not mad at you. Its just my own anxiety. Know what would really help me? Could you have your clothes packed and by the door by 4pm? Always control yourself first, not other people. And watch how your interactions change.
