When youre DJing an event you can have 100+ people or more, depending on you to make sure their night goes well and everyone has fun. This can be scary! This is DeeJay Shellys Black & White Series on how to create a great playlist. Knowing what song to put on your playlist next may not always be in black and white. In this video series for beginner DJs (or any DJ) I want to share with you 15 tips Ive learned in my 15 years experience as a DJ on how to create a great playlist. Tip # 4: Take Risks! You may be afraid to play anything outside your (or their) comfort zone, because youre afraid it could ruin the night. Ive been there! As a beginning DJ first starting out, I would only play the songs that were popular at the time. However, I started to realize if I keep playing the same music everyone else does - Ill just be another DJ, not DeeJay Shelly! So, I started to take risks. I started to play songs I knew the audience may or may not be familiar with, but I knew they were great songs. Keep in mind, Im not just talking about new songs. You can take risks with any music genre - new or old. Trust yourself. Trust your instincts. If you think a song will go over well, just try it! What are the two possible outcomes? 1) You clear the dance floor. If this happens, dont keep playing it! Fade it out and Fade into another song. So if you are going to take a risk with a song - make sure you have another song ready to back it up if it doesnt work! Get everyone back on the dance floor. Everyones having a great time again. Most likely no one will remember this awkward moment as long as you get them back on the dance floor. You chalk it up to a learning experience. You still have a successful night. 2) You take a risk and you NAIL it! Everyone is blown away. You played a song your audience maybe has never heard, hasnt heard in a long time, or a song from a different music genre then what youve been playing so far. Your audience LOVES it.
