When youre the parent (especially a mom) of a T1 child, your need - TopicsExpress

When youre the parent (especially a mom) of a T1 child, your need to control...just about everything you can in life, kicks in. At the moment of diagnosis, you put on an invisible armor of sorts...grab any and every weapon you can find to fight...and charge in swinging (and even screaming at the top of your lungs)!!! You try to put up hedges of protection around your child...you stand guard 24-7 to ensure their health and safety are monitored properly. The thought of handing over that responsibility to anyone else is unthinkable....even for a moment...Trusting someone else to help you look after your child is impossible...what if they dont know all that you know?? What if they arent as vigilant as you are?? No one can care as much as you do....well...thats me...Im that warrior mom in what I feel is a daily battle of sorts against an enemy that is attacking my boy every second...relentless and at times, undetected...but I have a new weapon or better yet, soldier that stands in battle with me...my angel, Apollo. What used to go undetected has now been exposed...Ive grown to trust him...read him...we definitely speak an unspoken language (I know this sounds nuts!)...I can breathe a bit now...I dare say relax...knowing his incredible nose is always keeping an eye on our boy. I love that he not only connects with Riley, but with me. Im grateful God has given us a willing warrior...in such a beautiful form. Hes not a cure...he cant administer insulin or help test Riley, but he alerts us to danger...something we didnt have before.
