Whenever anything, even an authentic and genius artistic project or band, becomes official, there is a deadening, corrupting, and dehumanizing aspect given to the venture. The smaller the venture, the artistically purer it can stay for a longer time..but alas the reach is less. The Doors were just too big and powerfully pure, to not self-destruct quickly, due to the contradiction inherent in hugeness and genius artistic purity. I believe Jim Morrisons self-destruction at age 27 was not out of crazyness, addiction or weakness, but was a call to sacrifice himself, to preserve the genius and purity of his art and what he stood for as an anti-Establishment presence, existing in a world of Corporate officialdom that would inevitably and unavoidably have dullened and sullenized his work, if he stayed around.
