Where are the dead? Are they in Heaven, Hell, Purgatory or in their grave? 1. What is the nature of man? Is he made up of a spirit, soul or dust? *Genesis 2:7 And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. NB: Man is made up of dust and the breath of life which forms the soul. Hence the living Man himself is the Soul. The above verse DOES NOT SAY God gave man a soul neither does it say man possessed a soul. The living being which is the man is the soul. Mathematically, SOUL(MAN)= DUST+ Breath of life (Spirit), 2. How does the Bible recognise this particular meaning of the soul? * Genesis 12:5 And Abram took Sarai his wife, and Lot his brothers son, and all their substance that they had gathered, and the SOULS that they had gotten in Haran; and they went forth to go into the land of Canaan; and into the land of Canaan they came. *Genesis 46:26 All the SOULS that came with Jacob into Egypt, which came out of his loins, besides Jacobs sons wives, all the SOULS were threescore and six; *Acts 7:14 Then sent Joseph, and called his father Jacob to him, and all his kindred, threescore and fifteen SOULS. *Acts 27:37 And we were in all in the ship two hundred threescore and sixteen SOULS. *1 Samuel 24:8 David also arose afterward, and went out of the cave, and cried after Saul, saying, My lord the king. And when Saul looked behind him, David stooped with his face to the earth, and bowed himself. 24:11 Moreover, my father, see, yea, see the skirt of thy robe in my hand: for in that I cut off the skirt of thy robe, and killed thee not, know thou and see that there is neither evil nor transgression in mine hand, and I have not sinned against thee; yet thou huntest my SOUL to take it. *Psalms 40:13 Be pleased, O LORD, to deliver me: O LORD, make haste to help me. 40:14 Let them be ashamed and confounded together that seek after my SOUL TO DESTROY IT; let them be driven backward and put to shame that wish me evil. *Revelation 16:3 And the second angel poured out his vial upon the sea; and it became as the blood of a dead man: and every living soul died in the sea. NB: Soul simpily means any living entity which even includes fishes of the sea. A SOUL is anything with life. Soul is therefore life. 3. Can a Soul die? Is there anything such as IMMORTAL SOUL? *Ezekiel 18:20 The soul that sinneth, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son: the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him. *Job 4:17 Shall MORTAL MAN be more just than God? shall a man be more pure than his maker? 4. Who only has IMMORTALITY? *1 Timothy 1:17 Now unto the King eternal, IMMORTAL, invisible, the only wise God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen. 1 Timothy 6:16 WHO ONLY HATH IMMORTALITY, dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto; whom no man hath seen, nor can see: to whom be honour and power everlasting. Amen. 5. What happens at DEATH? * Ecclesiastes 12:7 Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it. *Psalms 146:3 Put not your trust in princes, nor in the son of man, in whom there is no help. 146:4 His breath goeth forth, he returneth to his earth; in that very day his thoughts perish. *Job 34:15 All flesh shall perish together, and man shall turn again unto dust. *Psalms 104:29 Thou hidest thy face, they are troubled: thou takest away their breath, they die, and return to their dust. NB: At death, the Soul cannot exist since the dust and the breath of life have been separated. The person no longer exist just as he/she didnt exist before his/her birth. 5. How did God describe this sad fate of man to our first parents? *Genesis 3:19 In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the GROUND; for out of it wast thou taken: for DUST thou ART, and unto dust shalt thou return. 6. Are the dead really dead? Are they aware of their surroundings? *Ecclesiastes 9:5 For the living know that they shall die: but the DEAD KNOW NOT ANY THING, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten. 9:6 Also their LOVE, and their HATRED, and their ENVY, is now PERISHED; neither have they any more a portion for ever in any thing that is done under the sun. 9:10 Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the GRAVE, whither thou goest. *Psalms 146:4 His breath goeth forth, he returneth to his earth; in that very day his THOUGHTS perish. *Psalms 115:17 The DEAD praise not the LORD, neither any that go down into silence. *Psalms 6:5 For in death there is no remembrance of thee: in the grave who shall give thee thanks? *Isaiah 38:18 For the grave cannot praise thee, death can not celebrate thee: they that go down into the pit cannot hope for thy truth. 38:19 The living, the living, he shall praise thee, as I do this day: the father to the children shall make known thy truth. *Psalms 30:9 What profit is there in my blood, when I go down to the pit? Shall the dust praise thee? shall it declare thy truth? NB: The dead are not conscious somewhere. 7. The Bible likens death to sleep. Are sleeping people aware of their surroundings and the passage of time? Deuteronomy 31:16 And the LORD said unto Moses, Behold, thou shalt SLEEP with thy fathers; and this people will rise up, and go a whoring after the gods of the strangers of the land, whither they go to be among them, and will forsake me, and break my covenant which I have made with them. 1 Kings 2:10 So David slept with his fathers, and was buried in the city of David. Psalms 13:3 Consider and hear me, O LORD my God: lighten mine eyes, lest I sleep the SLEEP of death; Acts 7:59 And they stoned Stephen, calling upon God, and saying, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit. Acts 7:60 And he kneeled down, and cried with a loud voice, Lord, lay not this sin to their charge. And when he had said this, he fell ASLEEP. John 11:11 These things said he: and after that he saith unto them, Our friend Lazarus SLEEPETH; but I go, that I may awake him out of SLEEP. 11:12 Then said his disciples, Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well. 11:13 Howbeit Jesus spake of his death: but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep. 11:14 Then said Jesus unto them plainly, Lazarus is DEAD. 8. When will the dead be conscious? John 5:25 Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live. 5:28 Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, 5:29 And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation. John 6:40 And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the LAST DAY. 1 Thessalonians 4:16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the DEAD in Christ shall rise first: 4:17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. Daniel 12:2 And many of them that SLEEP IN THE DUST of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt. 9. How did Peter describe the death of David? Acts 2:29 Men and brethren, let me freely speak unto you of the patriarch David, that he is both DEAD and buried, and his sepulchre is with us unto this day. 2:34 For David is NOT ASCENDED into the heavens: but he saith himself, The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, 10. How well did Martha understand the state of the dead concerning her brother Lazarus? John 11:24 Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the LAST DAY. NB: She did not say her brother was in heaven. 11. Are some dead people being tormented in Hell now? Are they being punished? * Job 21:30 That the wicked is reserved to the day of destruction? they shall be brought forth to the day of wrath. * Jude 1:14 And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying, Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints, 1:15 To execute judgment upon all, and to convince all that are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have ungodly committed, and of all their hard speeches which ungodly sinners have spoken against him. *2 Peter 3:7 But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men. 3:10 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up. NB: The wicked will be punished at the day of the Lord. This would happen during his appearing. Revelation 22:12 And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be. 12. How about Lazarus and the Richman? The story told by Jesus is A PARABLE. Parables have symbolic but not literal meaning. Jesus could not have contradicted himself for he had said he will resurrect the dead from their grave not Abrahams Bosom or hell. 13. Why is the story a parable? If taken literal, the parable would explicit sayings of the Bible on the state of the dead. For instance we do not go to Abrahams bosom at death. The righteous dead who lived before Abraham such as Abel, Seth or Noah would have had no place to lay their heads since Abraham was not born then. The righteous were communicating with the wicked although they were separated by a big gulf. How can a drop of water alleviate the suffering of a man in flames of fire..etc 14. After Jesus had narrated the Parable of the sower, what did the disciples do? Mark 4:10 And when he was alone, they that were about him with the twelve asked of him the parable. 4:13 And he said unto them, Know ye not this parable? and how then will ye know all parables? 4:14 The sower soweth the word... 15. Who was the first to preach IMMORTALITY OF THE SOUL? Genesis 3:4 And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall NOT SURELY DIE: 16. But what had God told them? Genesis 2:17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof THOU SHALL SURELY DIE. WHO WOULD YOU LISTEN TO? Happy sabbath friends!
