Where is the African response to the threat of Ebola? Where is the ECOWAS response? Where are our leaders? Where is the funding for our research bodies to concentrate on finding solutions to our challenges? Most of these organisations in Africa are either dead or dying – no support, no funding. As I ranted last week, as I reflected on the fact that there was calm as two patients were discharged in the United States versus chaos in Liberia as armed gangs raided an Ebola isolation centre, I was reminded that the African Union had asked for immediate deployment of medical staff to the worst-hit countries. In August, after the disease has been rampaging since beginning of year. What angered me the more was the use of word ‘immediate.’ Well, perhaps I am asking for too much. Or, as in the BBC report on the earthquake hoax of 2010, maybe the AU statement was “just deliberate mischief, a simple innocuous message, or a joke between friends.”
