Where the criminal justice system says that there have to be exceptional circumstances in which you would detain a child and that detention should only be used for children who’ve committed serious and violent crimes. These children have committed no serious and violent crime, these children have simply asked to come and be part of our community and our society and that is why this legislation that we’re debating here today is a stain on our national character. And I would put to all of you, is this how you would want your family and your children to be treated if you found yourself to be seeking asylum somewhere else in the world. Look at your own children, think about your own children, would you be prepared for your children to be locked up indefinitely on Manus island. Yes or no. Would that be okay for your own children? And if it wouldn’t be okay for your own children, why is it okay to punish other children?
