Where to stay in 1964 NYC. 1960: Crime was spiraling. The city was becoming dirty. The perception of NYC was expensive and unfriendly across the rest of the country. There was a race problem and a municipal corruption problem and an out of control heroin epidemic which led to a surge in street crime. Tourism had been declining for years. The Worlds Fair Corporation sunk a huge sum into an extensive COME TO NY ad campaign, which led to a tourism resurgence in 1963, 64, and 65. This did not translate to huge numbers of out of towners seeing the Fair, but no one objected. Hotels were at full capacity those three years, and quite a few of them pulled the plug in late 1965 or 1966, allowing them to bow out in the black.
