Which deed is loved most by Allah? Abdullah bin Mas’ud said, ‘I asked the Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam), Which deed is loved most by Allah?’ He replied, ‘To offer As-Salat (the prayers) at their early (very first) stated times. Abdullah bin Mas’ud asked, ‘What is next (in goodness)?’ The Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said, ‘To be good and dutiful to one’s parents.’ Abdullah bin Mas’ud asked, ‘What is next (in goodness)? The Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said, ‘To participate in Jihad for Allah’s cause.’ Abdullah ibn Mas’ud added, ‘The Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) narrated to me these things, and if I had asked more, he would have told me more.’” [Sahih Al-Bukhari] Commentary: It is a duty on man to be kind to his parents, because Allah says (interpretation of the meaning): “…be good and dutiful to your parents…” [Al-An’aam 6:151] It is a must to show gratitude to them in all kinds of ways, as Allah says (interpretation of the meaning): “…give thanks to Me and to your parents…” [Luqmaan 31:14] It is a must to show them all kinds of good treatment, because of the command of the Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) to treat them good and be kind towards them as found in the above Hadith and many other similar Hadith. The ways in which one can show them kindness and respect are many, some examples are as follows: Visiting them Speaking kindly to them Lowering to them the wing of humility Offering them gifts Not showing preference to your wife or child over them. And Allah Knows Best!
