While April is Autism awareness month I just want to take a minute to address another disorder. ADHD. Some people believe in it, others dont. But what I do want to share is that ADHD is often treated the same as autism when you get into behavioral therapies. A lot of things that children with ADHD do similar things and show similar symptoms, as children with autism. Sometimes its even hard to differentiate at first. Often looking up charts and diets and suggestions for children with ADHD I see autism listed as well. ADHD is a neurological disorder (brain). And as the parent of a child with ADHD it is very hard to see little support and much judgement when it comes to parenting a child with this disorder. Its not something caused by parenting or lack of. I can show you brain scans and a lot of information. So I challenge you today to please also support those with ADHD and the parents of as well. It is very hard and so many are ashamed to talk about it because they are afraid of judgment or rude remarks when in fact it is just as hard to deal with as autism, bipolar, and many other disorders. Its more than a joke about hey look a squirrel. Its a daily heartbreaking struggle. Its been the hardest thing I have had to deal with in my life and I have just come to the point where I feel like I must be an advocate for my child and other parents out there. Its been on my heart for a while to just be open about the challenges I face with this and to raise awareness.
