While I am doing some preliminary preparations for a trip to Addis Ababa next month, I chanced upon this film about the Blue Nile (Mystery of he Nile: The Gift of Ethiopia). In it was an interesting caption how the Egyptian Coptic Christians were able to survive the Muslim threat (of annihilation) in Egypt. Somehow, the Egyptian Coptics have for centuries had close connections with the Ethiopian Orthodox Christians (note, Ethiopia is the first Christian country on earth, along with Armenia). It said that everytime the Muslims threatened to annihilate the Egyptian Coptics, their Ethiopian brethren threatened to close or divert the Blue Nile. The Nile is the longest river on earth, about 3,000 miles stretching from the Ethiopian Highlands, through Sudan, and all the way to Egypt.
