While I hope to have a productive working relationship with new Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) Director Abigail Hopper, her past work in the administration of Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley showcases some troublingly hostile comments towards fossil fuels. Excerpt from July 2014 O’Malley Administration public comments to BOEM hearing: Given the excellent potential of offshore renewable wind energy development, the Mid-Atlantic region’s focus should remain on the development of this safer, cleaner energy source and not fossil fuels in the face of climate change. Maryland does not support oil and gas exploration and development in the Mid-Atlantic. We do stand ready to support the Administration in its work to increase domestic renewable energy production, conserve energy, and address climate change. Domestic oil and gas production has made America more energy independent, more secure, and is a pivotal economic driver in our nation as well as many states and localities. However, the Obama Administration has closed more offshore areas to oil and gas leasing than have been opened up. In fact, more than 85 percent of the outer continental shelf remains closed to oil and gas leasing. I hope that Director Hopper will listen to the bipartisan support for exploration in the Atlantic and will work to expand the opportunities to explore truly new offshore areas for both renewable energy opportunities AND oil and gas and was not deliberately chosen to stifle the progress of American energy independence. fuelfix/blog/2014/12/18/ocean-energy-bureau-gets-new-director/
