While I initially was underwhelmed with Andrew Dominiks Killing - TopicsExpress

While I initially was underwhelmed with Andrew Dominiks Killing Them Softly and Ridley Scotts The Counselor, these are the two films that have haunted me more than the ones I actually liked when first viewing. These two films have stuck around more than the so-called award winners and the ones the critics ejaculated like crazy over the years. No, these two films have stayed with me because I see the ugliness and the desperation of the American Dream that they truly represent! The only other film that I have seen get it so right is Paul Thomas Andersons There Will Be Blood and I was swept away by it immediately. But Scott and Dominik really have a way of getting under your skin in their films. Brad Pitts speech at the end of Killing Them Softly is contemporary gospel and Ruben Blades speech in The Counselor is a warning sign to any one who has ever gotten burned. Of course I know why I could not warm to these films immediately; it was like looking in a mirror and seeing what I have become. Truth be told, at the end of the day that may not be escapism, but its quite a yardstick of euphoric nihilistic wonder! The Counselor and Killing Them Softly may be the best films about now. If Breaking Bad is the best show about America in the 21st Century, I think we can give these films their rightful due! Now, I only wished I loved Bad Teacher as much as I loved the trailer!
