While I was at home, recovering from what the doctors said were - TopicsExpress

While I was at home, recovering from what the doctors said were “numerous” heart attacks, and quadruple bypass surgery, I found plenty of time to write - mostly poetry. And with the encouragement of a dear friend, Ernestine Smith-Collins, helped her complete a novel. The good Lord has blessed me to be able to write poems relating to nearly every subject and circumstance that exists in human experience - poems about life, death, heroism, patriotism, politics, sarcasm, love, hate, romance, youth, old age, and many other topics. It seemed that I never had much difficulty at all in coming up with the words and lines that I needed in order to say what was in my heart. So many dear friends, relatives, and acquaintances have commented to me how much they have been blessed by the poems that I have written. A few friends have told me that they believed that I could write a poem that would fit any circumstance or situation in life, and I was almost convinced that I actually could. But in light of one recent event in particular, namely, the massacre of twenty children and six teachers in Newtown, Conneticticut, I somehow found my old scarred heart at a loss for the “proper” words with which to express what my heart feels. There simply isn’t anything that sickens or saddens me more than seeing innocent children mercilessly gunned down by a deranged killer. I cannot bear to see any child abused in any form, let alone murdered for no logical reason. I did do a lot of praying, and soul-searching after that incident, and, yes, I did come up with a poem that does say at least some of what my heart feels. Time passed, and another tragedy, then another, and yet another in Boston. In light of these, and numerous other “tragedies”, which, I call “atrocities” that are taking place in this country - things that the news media either overlook, or consider less important, like a million babies being murdered each year, many folks have requested that I re-post this poem for those who didn’t get the chance to see it the last time it was posted. So, here it is again, a poem entitled - When Words Just Aren’t Enough. When Words Just Aren’t Enough As we once again as Americans face yet another tragedy There are some who say we should all hang our heads in shame That something as horrible as what we have seen could happen here in this land And it seems that all of us are searching for someone to blame While the hearts and homes of so many families have been broken beyond repair And no one seems to have an answer anymore We ask ourselves what will happen next, and how many more must die And should we add yet another deadbolt to our door Can any of us feel safe in our homes, in our schools, or the shopping mall Or is there safety anywhere we might go Can anyone be safe where sin is rampant, in a land where God is insulted Surely you must agree that the answer is NO Men are not safe from their fellow men, and neither can they be As long as there is sin in the human heart It is a fact so sad but true, since Cain killed his brother Abel Men have been killing their brothers from the start And the killing will continue for as long as men shall live In a fallen world that has long been cursed by sin Time cannot cure it, words cannot slay it, and men can find no answer There must be a transformation wrought within Until the hearts of men are changed by the grace of the risen Lord There will be no safety for them anywhere For He alone has the power to save, to cleanse and sanctify And on a cross He proved His love and care To the dear families who are grieving today, I can only offer you this That there is safety in Jesus Christ alone In Him there is comfort, peace and hope, and consolation sweet And the deepest love this world has ever known © 2012 Arvil Jones
