While I was at the vet with Gracie, we talked about canine - TopicsExpress

While I was at the vet with Gracie, we talked about canine prostate health again because Pierce is coming up on 4. Just a reminder here: 80% of ALL intact male dogs, whether purebred or mixed breed, will develop Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy by the time they are middle aged (5-7 yrs old). That means only 1 out of 5 will not develop it. The other 4 will have difficulty peeing and possibly intestinal blockage from the swelling of the prostate. Some will die before they are diagnosed. If youre going to keep your dog intact, annual check ups for prostate health are an absolute necessity and if it is a giant breed, it needs to be done by ultrasound for clear diagnosis. I personally do not keep my dogs intact beyond 5 and take a risk with their well being. I collect early and get what I want on ice and take the risk away. Please, please give this a thought for their sake. If you want more information on BPH, contact me and I will email it to you.
