While I was reading Ray Davies book Americana, he related a story I had remembered from some years ago. The Kinks were touring the U.S. when Ray got a phone call from his management in London. Seems that the BBC was upset because they had strict rules about no advertising, and the Kinks new song Lola mentioned Coca-Cola in the opening lyric (I guess the fact that the song was about dancing in a sleazy club with a transvestite was deemed OK.) Since this was the pre-digital days, Ray had to fly back to London and come into the studio to replace Coca with Cherry on the master tape, then he flew back to Chicago for a Kinks gig. But the Coca-Cola version is still around, I have it on a vinyl compilation called Kollectible Kinks. The song is identical to the later version except for that one word.
