While It’s Today The Sweetness of Unity “Behold, how good - TopicsExpress

While It’s Today The Sweetness of Unity “Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!” (Psalm 133:1) “But brother goeth to law with brother, and that before the unbelievers. Now therefore there is utterly a fault among you, because ye go to law one with another. Why do ye not rather take wrong? why do ye not rather suffer yourselves to be defrauded?” (I Corinthians 6:6-7) I don’t know how to put it any clearer than these to verses. Only those who have tasted it can truly know the goodness, the sweetness of unity among the brothers and sisters of Christ. Unity is a fragile thing and thus it is all the more precious. Unity is difficult to maintain because it requires us to swallow our pride and defer to another. Sometimes, in order to preserve unity, we must allow ourselves to be wronged and defrauded as Paul says. Rather than exposing and exacerbating our disagreements and disunity, Paul teaches us to confront and work through our differences with humility, each ready to be wronged in order to restore unity and harmony. So, this morning’s encouragement and exhortation is short. Strive to achieve and maintain unity with your fellow believers. Want to know what unity looks like? Search the scriptures: there are numerous passages that speak about humbling yourself, being like-minded, and unifying around the Gospel. Unity is rare, even within a single congregation, much less among believers of different denominations. But our call is to seek unity for in this way we reflect the unity which is God’s design and we offer that sweet smelling oil which is so pleasing to our heavenly Father.
