While all coroner cases are tragic, there is nothing sadder or more devastating than the death of a child. In Kentucky, the elected coroner is the chair of the Child Fatality Review Committee in all counties. I have been Fayette Countys chair for the past 12 years. This committee reviews the deaths of individuals who are under the age of 18 in order to discover possible trends like the choking game, prescription and illicit drug use, breaches in child and infant safety, and discovery of faulty childrens products such as furniture, toys, etc. We communicate our findings to the community to educate them and help ensure the safety of our children. The committee is made up of a number of knowledgeable community partners from Fayette Co. Public Schools, the Fayette County Health Department, Police, Fire, LFCUG social workers, the County Attorneys office, and the Commonwealth Attorneys office. (In addition, I also work with Fayette County private and public schools crisis teams when a coroner case involves a student.)
