While attending Crawford High School in my senior year, I was chosen by my teacher Patricia Ulloa-Mallett to be a speaker at the Adelante Mujer Latina Conference held at SDCC. I had the great honor to do a speech where I introduced Michele Serros. By this time, I had fallen in love with her book Chicana Falsa...my favorite story was Attention Shoppers where she so wittingly stated how racism existed in the frozen food isle among the various styles of vegetables. I loved that book and hearing her perform impacted my life more than I could have ever imagined. Funny that years later, it was me with a pen in hand and love in my heart..writing and performing spoken soul to many youth and community. She really was my role model and inspiration at a very young age when I didnt even know what the word Chicana meant. She passed away a couple days ago and I was very moved by the news and grateful that I had a chance to come into contact with her awesome work and vibrant spirit. Thank you for your words and your courage to write and share with the world. Youre words made an impact to so many. Love and light to you and all those you touched :)
