While in Shanghai I was fortunate to catch Yu Hongleis solo show at Simon Wangs Antenna Space in the M50 Art District. Ive always been taken by this artists vision, mining a very interesting set of semio-anthropological methods that he shares with the equally fascinating (and in some ways parallel) work of his wife Guan Xiao. In these new works, Honglei is apparently developing a practice whereby he suggests inate connections between cultural artefacts from wildly differing histories and geographies, dredging these connections up into an ornately formalised world of his own invention (often based around his consistent use of encrustation in the settings, a feature that Guan Xiao also makes use of).
