While in the Black Hills, we saw several Proghorns, animals that are erroneously called antelopes, but really are not. They are the second-fastest living land animal, able to run up to 55-60mph -- only the cheetah is faster. The question I had was: why are they so fast? There are no current predators in the area that are close to this fast. The answer is even more interesting: cheetahs! Not the African variety, but an extinct animal that used to live in North America, but died out 15-20K years ago. Its genetically closer to pumas, but built like a cheetah, only a bit bigger. Heres a cool story about this: elkodaily/lifestyles/pronghorn-antelope-racing-predators-long-gone/article_57002104-81a5-5264-97ae-5187fa9b36e6.html
