While it saddens me to lose him, I prefer to treat his passing the way I would want mine to be treated and that is not with sorrow but a celebration of his life. My friend Draco passed today with peacefulness in my arms. I will remember him as a big goofy kid at heart all the way through his last breath. Draco, my first sport dog, was far better than I was, but he was a willing and patient teacher. He NEVER held a grudge against me, but many times he deserved to. I have so many great memories of him, but I have to say my favorite is taking him on a search in my junkyard after an alarm call. I had been through this routine many times in training. Middle of the night an alarm goes off and I go to search the property. I have Draco with me and we start to search the 12 acre perimeter filled with wrecked cars expecting a false alarm or someone already gone. As we reach the far end of the property I see signs of forced entry and damage so I call the police and report. I continue my search with Draco and about 100 yards further into the search his tail comes straight up and he starts air scenting hard pulling me towards a particular truck and begins barking. The hair on the back of my neck stands on ends and I know what this means in training, but is there REALLY someone there??? Alone in the dark I announce to Come out or I will send the dog Immediately someone comes from behind a vehicle pleading PLEASE NO, PLEASE DONT LET HIM BITE ME As I point my weapon at him and tell him to get on the ground while Draco barks anxiously in his face. He could care less about the gun, but was scared to death of a dog that would have never bit him and was doing nothing more than playing an advanced version of hide and seek. I often think back to that day and play the What If game.... In previous years I did the search on my own without a dog. What if I had been alone that night??? The night ended with the bad guy going to jail and and unhappy dog not getting his bite on a hidden sleeve. Goodbye my friend and I already miss you :)
