While it’s true that Albert Camus was a pied-noir and citizen of France, he was the child of a Spanish mother and an Alsatian father, and so he was keenly aware of being an outsider. He understood how the French settlers were outsiders, how they in turn made the Arabs and Berbers to feel outsiders in their own land, and how he himself could not feel entirely French or entirely welcome. Not surprising then that he should have written the famous The Outsider.
