While out doing the chicken chores this morning I had a serious discussion with myself about the future of my little farmette, that Hubby calls a money pit, out of control hobby. I do so love what I am doing, building a sustainable lifestyle for our retirement is the actual main goal, providing nurishing wholesome chicken and eggs for our farm friends is a big bonus, and getting to meet so many friendly, informative, caring folks is just wonderful, and it is actually a very good tax shelter for us. But, there is always a but right. Having recently been diagnosed with stage 2 lung cancer and facing 6 months to a year to regain my health, I have to make my health the up most priority. I promised my husband I would be there for him till the end and I want to keep that promise and I have 9 grand kids that I need to see graduate and marry. It is already taking me twice as long to feed, water and move the chicken tractor. As this health crisis continues the loss of energy and stamina will only get worse. And I need all the energy and stamina I can muster to fight this fight. So with all of that in mind, sad to say, I have decided to leave the broiler chicken business. At least temperary, I may get back into it next spring. But for now I feel this is the best decision I could make for myself and my family. I will miss the wonderful relationships we have grown over the years. I thank each and every customer that has taken a chance on us, helped us grow and supported our efforts. Do not fear the loss of fresh pastured chicken. I can highly recommend a wonderful farm, close to us, that provides an excellent broiler chicken, pasture raised in the same sustainable methods we use here at our farm. They are an lovely Amish family, with a beautiful farm called Peacheys Pastured Poultry. They also provide pastured turkey and grass feed beef.
