While rushing back from Willard today I encountered a hitch hiker - TopicsExpress

While rushing back from Willard today I encountered a hitch hiker with his thumb out half way between New Haven and Plymouth. I make it a point to always pick up hitchhikers. This isn’t popular for most people.(Years ago a friend and I had traveled across New Zealand this way only with the help of strangers there.I always remember that how much it helped us and we met many nice people.)This time was different I was pressed for time and as I raced by I thought of all the typical reasons why not to do this .You know he will rob me, kill me, car jack me, you know the normal reasons why people fear to pick up hitch hikers. I never thought like that before but today I did and I passed that little hitch hiker right by….I reached Lincoln Court here in Plymouth and had a change of heart. I quickly turned around and found him and asked where he was heading he said Mansfield to the bus station. He was a very small younger man that was probably carrying 60lbs of gear. Luckily he was a smaller guy because my car is a disaster! I was almost embarrassed to pick him up! As we speed off I told him I would only be able to get him as far as Shelby he was very happy with that and we were off. We talked about quite a few things on that short speedy car ride we didn’t solve any of the world’s problems or anything that crazy but he seemed like a nice young man. As we reached the Shelby corporation limit it was time to say good bye to my hitchhiker friend I never ask for their names that is totally up to them if they wish to share. He pulled out his wallet and offered me money for my trouble I declined and wished him a safe travel back to Texas. He shook my hand and said his name was Lee . As I pulled away I felt happy with this brief encounter his grandma was terribly worried about him getting home safely. I felt I had helped him get back home. At the same time Lee had helped me interrupt a negative state of mind that I was in. I guess the moral of my long story is inconvenience yourself and help someone …..you not only will put a smile on someone’s else’s face but also your own .The world is filled with good people they just might need a bit of help at this point in their life.
