While serving in the military, I saw ppl salute with the left hand, salute with a cigarette in hand, etc.... In fact, most officers in the military did not give a properly taught salute (opened hand touching the eyebrow, almost no raising of the elbow, really) every time. Incorrect salutes were given by many of soldiers & officers that have served the country many of years. Yes, it is been overblown. However, when looking for negativity, you will always find it. If fact, the person(s) that made a big deal out of this probably didnt serve or have given an improper salute before.
