While the cable cars of San Francisco get all the love from tourists, I feel that the F-Market & Wharves Line light trains (F-Market tram for short) pack much more history and flavor while at the same time being cheaper and taking you to more places. While the cable cars usually look similar, have limited routes, and are always packed with tourists; the F Market trams not only have actual restored trams from SF, but they also have many more from all around the US and the world. They are also a crucial part of daily commute for natives of SF as well. Each tram that passes by will most likely look different and have a different background and history than the ones that passed by before it. The line starts from the wharves - where you can find the Fisherman’s Wharf, Pier 35, the ferry building etc - and works it’s way down Market Street all the way to Castro. Instead of waiting in long lines to be crammed in the cable cars, be sure to take the F Market trams while traveling SF for half the price. It’s also fun to research about the trams before hand and guess from which region or country each tram is. Don’t forget to ask the driver for a transfer ticket so you can hop on to any other form of transportation for free!
