While there are many shows out there this season seriously deserving more attention, I think Im gonna take this time to seriously vouch for one of the less exciting and spectacular, but competently made productions this season. Log Horizon cant be praised for mind blowing/ground breaking animation nor some kind of amazing writing (Yet), but its one of the most steady paced and well handled shows this season. No inconsistencies in animation, very few REPEATED animation slices, visually Log Horizon is well handled. What it should be praised for is a somewhat more realistic protagonist and a SOMEWHAT realistic commentary on MMORPG social dynamics. In certain MMORPGs that are played by and WoWing millions of players, it can seriously be eat or be eaten and without the right connections or friends in a game that has been around for a while. But when that world has become your new reality, one you cannot escape through death and is one half the size of the real world, Log Horizon looks to be asking the question What if this cluster of people was given this new world to live in and attempt to set up a new society within? The behavior of the characters in this show so far, while not depicting your average joe who doesnt play MMORPGs, has done phenomenally well depicting behavior of those who play such games. I can safely say that I see character traits of at least one of the characters in myself and recall people Ive played with sharing similar traits with others in the show. Be it the roleplayer, the strategist, the PKers (Player Killers) or many others I havent mentioned, anyone familiar with the genre will find someone or something familiar in Log Horizon. One last note to leave on, this show deserves a significant amount of praise for the info dumps on MMORPG mechanics for those NOT familiar with the genre. While some may criticize these moments of the show as padding, I find it quite engaging that the author of the novel put a healthy bit of focus into explaining these mechanics, as it definitely keeps from leaving ALL viewers in the dark. Between this and the absence of obnoxiously familiar character types, while you may find this show not as action heavy or fast paced as a certain other MMORPG show in the past year, we have something that looks like it wont spiral out of control and crash into the ground right after its taken off. Episodes 1-4 are available for free watching on Crunchyroll and episode 5 is currently available to subscribers of CRs service. Log Horizon is slated for a full 26 episode (2 cour) run until the conclusion of the Winter 2014 anime season. Its not for everyone with its somewhat slower pacing and not super intense and flashy action sequences, but this definitely could be a sleeper hit of the season.
