While visiting Tlaquepaque, the artisan and cultural mecca of Guadalajara, we happened upon a rare performance of Danza de los Voladores, (Dance of the Flyers), a 450 year-old Mezoamerican ritual. The flutist on top of the pole represents the deity at the center of the universe, symbolized as a bird, The flute is his song. The four flyers, also dressed in colorful bird-like garb, represent the four cardinal directions from the center (N, S, E, W, or the divine forces of earth, air, fire and water).
