While watching the All Star game tonight, I will be rooting for Murphy and the NL to win the game. I will also be thinking about the first two all star games I watched with my dad when I was a kid in 1967-68. In 1967, the franchise Tom Seaver pitching in his first all star game got the save in a fifteen inning 2-1 NL win. The following year Tom struck out five batters in two innings, including the great Mickey Mantle playing in his last All Star game. I would have loved to have seen Mickey and Tom go at it when they were both in their primes. It certainly would have been fun watching power against power. In the 1968 All Star game the NL won another close game 1-0. Jerry Koosman the runner up for the rookie of the year in 1968,( he lost to the great Johnny Bench by one vote I think)got the save striking out the great Carl Yastrzemski to end the game. We all knew at the time the Amazing Mets had two great pitchers that would give us so many thrills for the next ten years. Here is a tribute to my favorite Met of all time who pitched in ten all star games for our beloved Mets, only missing one time in 1974.
