While you were sleeping.. U.S. stocks close down after swinging between slight gains and losses Tuesday, with investors biding their time ahead of major economic news due later this week. The Dow Jones Industrial Average shed 70 points to 16912. The S&P 500 index lost nine points to 1970, and the Nasdaq Composite Index declined two points to 4443. Stocks gave up earlier gains amid news that the European Union agreed to place sanctions on broad sectors of the Russian economy, raising geopolitical tensions. European shares reversed earlier losses Tuesday, largely shrugging off fears surrounding the potential implications of additional sanctions on the Russian economy, even though jitters earlier in the session had spurred a wave of demand for safe-harbor assets. The Stoxx Europe 600 closed 0.3% higher with the FTSE 100 closing up 20 points to 6808, the DAX was up 55 points to 9654 and the CAC closed up 21 points to 4366.
