Whilst on about useful tips.... Personally I have been self employed for nearly 10 years, and know a few of the tricks and scams people use. One that most people dont know about and fall for time and again is online payments. I sell on eBay and recently it is about as safe as you can get (with all the new changes etc), and the new paypal system works a treat (I know there are a handful of folk who have had problems, but with 2 accounts in 10 years and 1000s of transactions I have only ever had 1 problem, and that was years ago and my fault). With the new get what you pay for or money back ebay and paypal have it covered......EXCEPT..... 1) The seller asks you to pay as a gift....this is what it says....A GIFT.... if you are paying a friend say a tenner for his Birthday..then fine....if you are all chipping in for the Saturday nights curry.....again fine.... If your buying something from somebody you dont know personally then RISK...... Terms like Its my own personal item, and not a business item and to make it cheaper please pay as gift WARNING.... if it doesnt arrive then tough....you paid as a gift, which is as it says a gift...you expect NOTHING in return.. Try to put in a claim to papal and they have every right to close your account due to fraud.... (I knew all this, but sadly people I speak to dont...and have been conned this way...) And second...... Let people pay with paypal then collect the item from you ......NO NO NO Paypal needs proof of postage in a claim, either tracking number or for smaller cheaper items the post office proof of postage. A lot of people round Christmas time are conned by this..... Is it ok if I collect the item as its for a gift, can paypal you so you know you have the money...CON CON CON... Mr Con pays you by paypal for the phone/computer console etc...you then see the money in your paypal and think its fine, so you go and meet up in a layby/shop/cafe etc half way etc..... All fine, you have the money in paypal, you hand over the item and go home...... Only to find there is a paypal none delivery claim waiting for you..... What can you do...err NOTHING...you have no proof of posting....you have no tracking number....you just wait the 4-10 days with the money on hold, and then Mr Con gets his money back....as you cant prove you posted it, which you didnt.. So for collection item, ALWAYS take cash, you have your items, I have my cash...simples.....eBay has a cash payment method and ALWAYS says cash on collection..... (again, not been fooled by this, but the ebay forums are full of such stories...)
