Whilst thinking about Madame Jo Jos closing down, I was reminded - TopicsExpress

Whilst thinking about Madame Jo Jos closing down, I was reminded of a quote by Gandhi: “They may torture my body, break my bones, even kill me. Then they will have my dead body, but not my obedience.” It may be a strange paralell to draw, but the way I see it is that the spirit of Soho that we see being stripped apart before our eyes, is the spirit of the rebel, the romantic, the pagan and the spirit of freedom. They may tear down our temples, our playgrounds for poets, even Madame Jo Jos. Then they will have an empty shell of a golden mile. Not our free spirit. We cant control what is outside of us. But they cant control what is inside of us. And that IS what Soho is about. Take it from a proud flat footed, half Indian, vegetarian son of a lesbian who had a midget grandmother. There will always be a home somewhere, for the strange ones. Wherever you are, force the expression of your spirit to the limit. Because if you do, you are a Soho Hero and Soho Heroes never die.
