Whirligig Geyser is a fountain type geyser located in the Porcelain Basin of the Norris Geyser Basin. This geyser, when active, can erupt every 3-7 hours, reaching heights of up to 15 feet for 2-3 minutes. It is known for its unique chugging sound during eruptions. This sound is caused by the violent escape of steam from a secondary vent in the pool, adjacent to the main bursting vent. On a quiet day this fun sound can be heard throughout the Porcelain Basin, sometimes being audible even as far as the Norris Museum.
