White board communication.. Jack had a good day of rest and periods of activity. He was communicating using the white board in his interaction to medical staff questions. His answer to a nurses question I have a dog and to a couple of buddies who stopped by briefly he simply said I love you. With his increasing ability to understand something has happened to him (good sign, though hard to know how much to say), Jack asked his mom What happened to me?. And later, repeated the same question. Short-term memory loss and not remembering youve asked something a bit ago is very, very normal at this stage. Its just great that he can start asking questions and answering them!! Along with being more grounded in space and time, there can be some mixing of information from earlier in life to mixing with more current information, etc. Again, based on his injury to his brain, very normal. Think of a file cabinet being hit and all the papers got scattered and you are slowly putting files back together again and arranging them in the cabinet. Jacks brain injury is described as a diffuse axonal brain injury (click the link below and watch the video to learn more, note there are degrees of this injury too, some can be mild, medium to severe). Jack has also complained about right shoulder pain (isnt it great he can provide that info on where he has pain!), they have requested an x-ray for Monday. John and Kelly are zeroing in on choosing his rehabilitation hospital. Day by day, Jack is getting stronger and finding ways to communicate and come back to being Jack. brainline.org/content/multimedia.php?id=5946
